However, this can be done on a local network or via the internet. This is to send a query to the email server of the address and see if there’s an established connection. This is a part of basic networking tools.

How To Ping An Email Address on Windows

The Command Prompt console in Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 lets you check the validity of an email address by pinging it. Once you get the list of MX (Mail Exchange) records for an email address domain, you can connect to the domain’s mail server and communicate with the email address for verification.

However, you’re required to turn on the Telnet remote access protocol before you can start the process. Here’s how to ping an email address:

Step One: Push “Windows + R” on your keyboard to open the run box. Type optionalfeatures and press “Enter.” This will open the windows features panel.

Step Two: Check the box corresponding to the “Telnet Client” and hit “Ok” when this turns on Telnet. Then, restart your computer.

Step Three: Open the Command Prompt console in Windows 8/8.1 by pressing the “Windows + X” keys together. On Windows 7, click the Start button, type Command Prompt, and press Enter.

Step Four: Type “nslookup -type=mx” in the command prompt console. Note that you do have to replace “” with the actual name of the domain you’re trying to ping. Press “Enter” now you have the list of MX records for that particular domain in front of you.

Step Five: Use the Telnet protocol to connect to the domain’s mail server. For example, when connecting to Gmail, enter Telnet 25, where you can swap with any of the other Gmail MX records. Press Enter to connect.

Step Six: Type “HELO” and push “Enter.” This will communicate with the domain’s server. Now you want to type the email address you’re trying to ping like this.” mail From: [email protected]” Press “Enter,” now type “rcpt to: [email protected]” Here you have to replace “YourEmail” for your email address and “CheckEmail” with the email address you want to ping.

Step Seven: Press Enter to ping. If the email address exists, you receive an “OK” message. If the email address isn’t valid, you get a “Does Not Exist” or “Disabled” message.
