What is Ethernet Splitter and How Does it Work

Many of us use devices like modems, switches, splitters, and bridges every day and still don’t know what an Ethernet splitter is and how it works. However we have many different pieces of Ethernet equipment available for use, but it can sometimes be confusing to know what they are and what they do.

Modems, switches, splitters, and bridges can often be confused with Ethernet switches. Although this item is a piece of Ethernet equipment, this equipment is particularly confusing because we have two types of Ethernet splitter that work differently. The first one is designed to carry two Ethernet links over one cable, and the other is for use with Power over Ethernet.

What is Ethernet Splitter?

Ethernet Splitter is a device used for Internet connections. This device has three Ethernet ports – two on one side and one on the other side. This reduces the Ethernet cabling capacity required, which is also used to send two different signals along the same cable.

A Splitter can be explained as a device that can be used to split a single Internet connection into two. Then, other devices can share the Ethernet signal according to the name splitter.

The Advantages and Disadvantages

Talking of the advantage, whenever you do not have Ethernet cables and only have a couple of long wires, an Ethernet splitter comes in handy. An Ethernet Splitter is very cheap and happens to be the best solution to network splitting.

On the other hand, cable splitters are not quite perfect for a slow network traffic speed. However, according to the professional survey, this reduces the data throughput from 1000Mbps to 100Mbps.

How Does it Work

For people that still don’t know how Ethernet Splitter works yet. It works by dividing an input signal into multiple output signals. However, each output on any two-way splitter has half the normal strength as the signal is divided by two.
