Apple iPhone XR is a better, more powerful, and the most affordable handset in the iPhone lineup (until iPhone SE 2020). In addition, the device has incredible battery life along with pre-installed latest iOS. But as we know, there isn’t any guarantee for the trouble-free Apple iPhone experience. Sometimes system lags or sometimes hardware issues make your device useless. This article explains why your iPhone XR won’t turn on and highlights four possible solutions.

If you’re facing this issue, then you’re in the right place to get your problem solved. Here’s what to do if you’re one of the users conflicting with this type of issue on the iPhone XR.

While such problems seldom occur to new devices, there are a lot of factors that can make them happen. But on a positive note, most of these issues are attributed to software errors, which means they are rectifiable by some guides and workarounds. So read further and find out what to do whenever you bump into an unexpected issue in which your new iPhone XR suddenly refuses to power on.

How to Troubleshoot iPhone XR that won’t Turn On

The following are potential solutions to power issues affecting old and new iOS devices. These methods can potentially fix your iPhone if it suddenly shuts off and won’t turn on, as long as no hardware damage is present.

Before rushing to the Apple Genius bar, you can still try these subsequent solutions.

Solution 1: Plug the Device to Charge

Sometimes your iPhone might have completely run out of power and therefore needs charging. Get your device connected to a charger and give it enough time to recharge.

If possible, plug it into a wall outlet to charge up. Also, ensure that you’re using an Apple-supplied charger or the one that came with it.

Solution 2: Force Restart iPhone XR

Sometimes users experience their phone getting stuck on a black screen due to system errors and rogue apps. In this case, you can try force restarting the iPhone and see if it works.

If iPhone XR won’t turn on after the iOS 14 update or is frozen, try to fix it with a simple force restart. Most times, when software performance degrades, a quick force restart is helpful to resolve the big issues. Whether your iPhone is updated to iOS 13/or iOS 14, this step will help you fix the problem.

  • Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  • Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, and then release it.

This process doesn’t affect any saved data on the phone’s internal memory, so creating backups won’t be necessary. Just let your iPhone boot up and finish charging.

Solution 3: Attempt to Restore Your iPhone XR in iTunes

Suppose you have a Windows PC or Mac computer with the latest version of iTunes (Finder for Mac) installed. In that case, you may continue to troubleshoot more complex system issues and resort to a recovery mode restore.

Performing a recovery mode restore is often needed when dealing with major software issues on the iPhone. This process can result in data loss; therefore, you’re advised to create a backup before doing this and follow the steps below to perform a recovery mode restore on your iPhone XR through iTunes or Finder:

  • Connect the iPhone with a Mac/computer using the lightning cable.
  • Launch iTunes/Finder on your computer/ Mac. Unlock your iPhone with Passcode to pair it with Mac/PC. Your iPhone will see on iTunes top windows, and Finder Will show the iPhone in Finder Sidebar.
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  • After that, quickly press and release the volume down button.
  • Hold down the Power button until iTunes says your iPhone is in Recovery mode in the popup with two options. First, don’t release when you see the Apple logo.
  • You will see “Update and Restore, select “Update” on your iTunes screen.
  • iTunes may take 15 to 20 minutes to complete the process successfully. If you find that iTunes/Finder is taking more time, then quit the process and begin the same process again.

Solution 4: Contact Apple Support

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve eliminated the issue’s possibility of being software-related. Your last resort is to get professional help.

If you’re under warranty and there is no physical or liquid damage, or if you have AppleCare+, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store to have your iPhone replaced. If you’re not near an Apple Store or you want to skip the line, Apple’s mail-in repair service is excellent.
