How To Turn Off Your iPod Nano Or iPod Classic
Many versions of the iPod nano don’t have a traditional On/Off button. So how do you turn off an iPod nano? The answer depends on which model you have. In this article, we explain how to turn off iPod Nano or iPod Classic.
As long as you’re running an iPod nano OS 1.1 or higher (a 6th or 7th generation Nano), you’ll be able to easily turn off your iPod in just one second. If your iPod nano is older than that, then all you can do to turn it off is to set it aside and wait for it to go into “sleep” mode to conserve energy. If you do have the newer generation of iPod nano and want to know how to turn it off, just follow these steps.
Instructions in this article apply to the 7th, 6th, and 5th Generation iPod nano and earlier models. Apple discontinued the iPod Nano on July 27, 2017.
Identify Your iPod Nano Model
You need to know what nano model you have in order to know which instructions to follow. This is particularly tricky because so many models of the iPod nano look similar.

The easiest way to do this is by comparing your iPod to the different generations listed on the Apple website.
Step 1: Open Apple’s “Identify your iPod model” site. Go to https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht204217 in your computer’s web browser. This is the website on which Apple lists their different iPod models.

Step 2: Select a model. At the top of the page, click the iPod option which correlates with your model of iPod. This will take you to the most recent generation of your selected iPod.
If you’re not sure which iPod model you have, scroll down until you see an iPod which resembles yours.
Step 3: Find your iPod’s model. Scroll through the various generations of iPods until you find one which resembles your model.
Step 4: Compare the iPod’s model with your iPod. Below the model’s generation heading, you’ll see a list of features included in the iPod. If the features listed on the site match the features your iPod has, you’ve found your iPod’s generation.

How To Turn Off Older iPod Nanos
The 5th generation iPod nano and earlier models don’t shut down in an expected way. They cannot be turned off. Instead, they go to sleep:
Gradually: If you use your nano for a minute or two then set it aside, the screen starts to dim and eventually goes black. This is the nano going to sleep. When an iPod nano is asleep, it uses less battery power. By letting a nano sleep, it conserves the battery for later.
Right Away: If you don’t want to wait for the gradual process, put the nano to sleep right away. Hold the Play/Pause button for a few seconds.
