Even the highest-tiered smartphones succumb to more serious troubles due to major software errors like data corruption or system crashes. In either scenario, the usual symptoms users would encounter include frequent app crashes, freezes, and stuck displays. This guide explains why your iPhone 7 or 7 Plus is stuck on the black screen of death and how to fix the issue for good!

Why is my iPhone 7 or 7 Plus Stuck on the black screen of death?

Stuck display issues on the iPhone 7 Plus occur due to various reasons. The most obvious reason is that the battery ran out, so the device powered down. Other factors that can cause black screen issues are firmware crashes, bad apps, update bugs, and, worst, hardware damage. In most cases, the software is to blame, just like what has occurred to many people after installing a new app or software update on their respective devices.

A software update or new app likely contains some bugs inflicting severe errors on the device and eventually afflicting major system functions. This can be tagged as the major problem for stuck display issues on your device. But software issues like these can still be rectified by some workarounds. If this is the issue, then the following information might be able to help you.

iPhone 7 stuck on black screen of death? Force restart

Your iPhone was working perfectly, and suddenly, it got frozen, not responding, or stuck on a white or black screen. The first recommended solution is to force restart your iPhone. And force restart is the same as that of a soft reset. The only difference is in how the steps are carried out.

To force restart your iPhone 7 Plus, you should simultaneously press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 to 20 seconds before releasing the buttons after the Apple logo appears.

Allow the phone to finish booting up. If it successfully boots up, the next thing you should do is eliminate the possible triggers. And if that doesn’t work, you will need to go for a full system restore.

If you think you can remember what happened before your iPhone gets stuck, eliminate the triggers immediately. For example, if you’re making some changes in settings when they occur, revert those changes. If it occurred after installing a new app, then remove or uninstall that app.

You can also consider performing software resets as one of the possible solutions to prevent the problem from recurring. You can proceed to reset all settings or erase all content and settings on your iPhone if needed.

To reset all settings on your device, go to Settings > General > Reset menu, then select the option to Reset all settings.

To erase all content and settings on your iPhone 7, go to Settings > General > Reset menu, then select the option to Erase all content and settings. This will wipe out everything from your device and restores its factory default settings.

Note: Erasing all content will lead to data loss, so it’s advisable to make a backup before proceeding with this step.

iPhone 7 stuck on black screen of death? Put iPhone in recovery mode

Performing a recovery mode restore can likely resolve major software issues that the usual factory reset or master reset could not be rectified. This is when you will need to use iTunes to repair and restore your iPhone system on a computer. Again, this could lead to data loss, so don’t forget to make a backup.

To get started, connect your device to the computer with the Apple-supplied Lightning cable or USB cable that came with it. Then, while your iPhone is connected, enter recovery mode with these steps:

  • Simultaneously press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for a few seconds till you see the Apple logo appears.
  • The Connect depicts the recovery mode to the iTunes screen. A few seconds later, iTunes will prompt you to restore your device. Just follow the onscreen commands to restore your iPhone in iTunes.

DFU Restore your iPhone 7 Plus

DFU mode stands for Device Firmware Update mode. Putting your iPhone 7 Plus in DFU Mode is usually enough to deal with complex system errors that cause an iPhone to get stuck on a black screen. It is the most in-depth type of restoration you can do on your iPhone. Putting your device in Device Firmware Update mode allows it to communicate and sync with iTunes even without activating the bootloader. DFU Mode allows for an iPhone to be restored directly from firmware. It requires a Mac or Windows PC with iTunes to use properly.

Precaution: Do not perform a DFU mode restore if your iPhone has liquid damage. There is a higher chance that your iPhone gets bricked as the process gets interrupted or not completed due to some hardware damage present on the phone. In this case, you better opt for a tech repair instead.

To enter DFU mode in iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, follow these steps:

  • First, connect your iPhone to the computer via a USB cable.
  • While the device is connected, simultaneously hold down both the Side button and Volume Down button for a few seconds.
  • After the elapsed time, release the Side button but keep holding down the Volume Down button.
  • If you’ve held the Side button for too long, you will be prompted with the Apple logo instead. Should that happens, then you will need to start all over. But if the screen remains black, your iPhone has successfully entered DFU mode and is all set for restore in iTunes.

Repair iOS using iTunes alternatives

Using iTunes alternatives can also be considered the last resort if all else fails to solve the problem. There are a lot of iOS repair tools that can be downloaded and installed on your computer. Among the widely used and most effective tools include FonePaw iOS System Recovery, Tenorshare ReiBoot, and PhoneRescue for iOS.

Be sure you pick the compatible tools with your computer operating system that supports the iPhone 7 or iOS version your phone is running on. Once you’ve downloaded and installed your preferred software, launch it when ready. Connect your iPhone to the computer and wait for it to sync with the software so you can start repairing any damaged system files or corrupted data that caused the device to get stuck on a black screen.
