Is your iPad randomly shutting down, and you don’t know why? You’re not alone.

Recently, many reports have surfaced on several well-known forums on the web that Apple’s iPad keeps restarting itself. This can be incredibly frustrating if you use your iPad to work from home. Fortunately, you can fix this issue if the problem is not with the battery or the hardware. This article explains why your iPad keeps shutting down and helps you troubleshoot it.

So, before taking your iPad to a Genius Bar, some troubleshooting tips can get your iPad running again.

Why is my iPad Restarting?

If your iPad shuts down randomly, it might be due to faulty flash memory. When your iPad has a broken memory, it shuts itself down every time the iOS framework tries to access it to protect the device.

Also, your iPad might be restarting due to low battery. So, make sure your device is charged.

How to Fix iPad Keeps Shutting Down Issue

Below are some easy but effective troubleshooting tips you can try to get your iPad up and running again:

Force Restart iPad

If your iPad keeps shutting off randomly while charging or playing games, it might be the time for a hard reset.

To force restart your iPad, follow the steps below:

  • Press and hold one of the volume buttons and the Power button simultaneously for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears. Now drag the slider.
  • For versions of iPad that have a home button, press the Power button for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears, and then drag the slider.
  • Wait for around 30 seconds and turn on your iPad by pressing the Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Update iOS on iPad

Updating your iPad to the latest iOS version is the best solution to fix it when your iPad keeps restarting. Upgrading to the newest firmware package eliminates all system bugs and malware and poses a potential solution.

Here’s how:

  • Open ‘Settings’ by tapping on the gear icon.
  • Tap ‘General’ and scroll down.
  • Tap on the ‘Software Update’ option and check for any available updates.
  • If there is one, tap on the ‘Download and Install’ button.

Drain Off the Battery and Charge

Sometimes simple solutions do wonders even for great and big problems. Instead of going and looking out for some complicated solution for iPad shutting off, you can go for a simple one. Try to drain off your iPad’s battery entirely and recharge it again. Once your iPad is charged, try to turn it on and see if the issue is gone.

Update Apps

Another potential solution to deal with software and app problems is to install pending app updates.

  • Press the Home button.
  • Go to the Apple Store.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the App Store screen and tap on updates. All apps with pending updates then appear.
  • Tap on the update button next to the apps to install individual app updates.
  • You can also tap the ‘Update All’ button at the top right corner to update everything automatically.

Delete Rogue Apps

Rogue apps can cause your device to malfunction. If your iPad turns off or crashes abruptly when using a specific app, then that app is likely the culprit. You should delete the app:

Here’s how:

  • Long press on the App and press the minus (-) sign next to it to remove it.

You can also delete the corrupted app from Settings. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings app and tap on General.
  • Tap on ‘iPad Storage.’
  • Locate the rogue app that you wish to delete and tap on it
  • Tap on the ‘Delete App’ option and then confirm your action.

Last Resort: Factory Reset

If you’ve tried all the troubleshooting tips mentioned on this list and your iPad is still randomly shutting down, it might be time to factory reset your device.

Note: When you follow this tip, you will lose all your information in this procedure. It is good to back up your device before factory resetting.

  • Open the Settings app and tap on General.
  • Scroll down, and click on ‘Reset’ then ‘Erase all content and settings.
  • Enter your password to confirm the process.

The process should take around 10 minutes. Once complete, you can restore the iPad to avoid any data loss.

Make a Genius Bar Appointment

If all else fails, you might want to consider taking your iPad to a Genius Bar near you. If your iPad is still under warranty, it will be fixed or replaced for free. Just keep in mind that the Apple warranty doesn’t cover water damages.
