Discord is a popularly known application that can be used for communicating and entertainment. However, Discord receives a steady stream of updates with bug fixes and new features, so it tries to update every time you open it. In this guide, we will be discussing the causes and how to fix the Discord update failed error.

Causes of Discord Update Failures

Connection problem is noted as the number one cause of this kind of problem on Discord. Ensure you didn’t attempt to update Discord without a strong internet connection to avoid an update failed error. However, anything that disrupts the ability of the Discord app to connect to the Discord servers will also cause this error. Antivirus programs, firewalls, and other related things can cause this error.

How To Fix Discord Update Failed Error

Method 1: Run Discord As an Administrator

This is the most simple solution to your problem, only if it works. Running the application with administrative permission will allow the updater to make changes on your device. Therefore, download and install the new Discord update. Here’s how:
  • Locate Search Bar on your Windows 10 in your taskbar.
  • Now type in “Discord” and Right-click on the Discord application from the results.
  • Then choose the Run as administrator option from the context menu.
  • Click Yes to allow Discord to run and make changes on the device if prompted by (UAC) User Account Control.

Method 2: Check If Discord Is Down

Sometimes, when you’re unable to update or keep receiving an update failed error, it might be happening due to Discord downtime. However, the Discord service may be offline, and this won’t give you a chance to update until the service is back online.

Method 3: Rename The Update.exe File

We recommend you attempt to rename this file to update Discord to the newest release successfully. Follow the below steps to check if this method works for you:
  • Navigate to your AppData folder, press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard, and paste in “C: \Users\Username\AppData” without quotation marks.
  • Make sure to replace your Username with your local account username.
  • Open File Explorer
  • Click the Local folder and locate the Discord folder inside.
  • Now open it via File Explorer.
  • Right-click on the Update.exe file, and choose Rename.
  • Type in UpdateX.exe (keep in mind that this is case-sensitive) and hit Enter.

Method 4: Temporarily Disable Your Antivirus

Check to see if Discord updates and starts normally with your antivirus off. If it does, there’s a conflict with your antivirus, and you’ll need to switch to a different one or adjust your antivirus settings to leave Discord alone.

Method 5: Disable Windows Defender

Sometimes Windows Defender may be blocking you from downloading a new update for Discord. However, you may disable Windows Defender to try and update Discord by following the steps below:
  • First, open the Settings application and click on the Update & Security tab.
  • Scroll to Windows Security → Virus & Threat protection → Manage Settings.
  • Toggle off Real-time protection temporarily and try to rerun Discord.
  • If the update succeeds, Windows Defender was most likely conflicting with the Discord client.

Method 6: Reinstall Discord And Clear App Data

Reinstalling Discord and clearing app data is probably the final solution to this problem. Once you’ve tried all methods and non of these worked for you. Now is the best time to clear your app data and reinstall Discord again.
