How To Block Unknown/Private Numbers On Android
How To Block Unknown/Private Numbers On Android – Do you get phone calls from robots telling you about credit card debt you don’t have or a human asking you to buy something you don’t need?
Robocalls or marketing calls are annoying. But unfortunately, we get them all the time, and no matter how many call centers are taken down, more spring up to bombard us with more annoying calls.
One frustration to add to the list is when these callers use the private number function to hide their real phone number. You can block calls from private numbers on Android, though.
How To Block Calls from Unknown Numbers on Android
An unknown number is different from a private number. A private number withholds its caller ID and shows a Private Number on your phone display. An unknown number will show a number you don’t recognize. These are easier to block as your phone can identify the caller and filter as appropriate.

Here’s how to block unknown numbers:
- Tap the phone icon on your Android, usually at the bottom of the home screen.
- Tap the three dots at the top of the Phone app screen.
- Now Tap “Settings” in the dropdown menu.
- Tap “Block numbers” and then toggle the button beside “Block unknown callers” to green.
For more customized control over your call blocking, or if your Android is one of the few that does not allow for complete blocking of unknown callers, try the app Should I Answer? which digs into a massive database of numbers that have been reported by others as spam, blocking them proactively from getting through to your phone.

How To Block Calls from Private Numbers on Android

- Toggle on Block private/withheld numbers.
Even though the text is different, this setting will effectively block private numbers. So if you know of friends or family who withholds their caller ID when calling, it might be a good idea to warn them you have this setup.
Stopping persistent private callers
If private numbers constantly call you, and the above steps don’t work for you, you can request the network block the call. As the caller ID is presented to your cell network to help call routing and billing, the network can put a block on the call for you if you raise a nuisance call complaint.
Different providers handle this differently, but they should have a mechanism for blocking persistent callers at the network level. Depending on your provider, it is worth contacting them directly and requesting a network block on the caller. You will need a couple of call examples with an accurate date and time so the network can trace the call. They should then be able to place a block on that number and stop them from bothering you.
