Wondering how to see a Wi-Fi password on Android? Maybe you’re connected to a network where you forgot the password, or want to check the password for a friend’s network so you can connect another device to it.
You can find WiFi passwords easily if you are running the latest version of Android. Otherwise, on older Android as well as on iPhone, this is not an easy task. Let’s check out these ways to find passwords for your WiFi network.

Find Wi-Fi Password on Android

Starting in Android 10, you can now see the Wi-Fi passwords for your saved networks without a rooted device. Let’s look at how to do this using stock Android 11 on a Pixel device—the process may look slightly different depending on your phone and Android version.
To view a Wi-Fi password on Android 10 or later:
  • Go to Settings on your phone and select Network & Internet.
  • Here tap on Wi-Fi and select the network for which you want to know the password. (You’ll need to tap Saved Networks to see other networks if you’re not connected to the same right now).
  • Now, tap the gear icon next to it and then tap Share.
  • Verify it’s you, and then the network’s password will show up below the QR code.

Check the Router Admin Page

You can also check the Wi-Fi router’s admin page to check the password if the connection is new and nobody has changed the password as of now. You can view the Wi-Fi network’s information on your phone.
On your Android phone, go to that WiFi network settings by following the steps mentioned above, now tap on Advanced, and under network details, you’ll be able to see the router’s IP address, which will be something like 192.168.01.
After that, type this into the address bar of your browser, and it will ask you to log into your router with the username and password you created while setting up the router. If you don’t know this too, possibly you didn’t change the default ones. So, try admin/admin.
Once you’re logged in, each router admin has a different set of steps for finding the Wi-Fi password. Try to look for settings or the Wi-Fi name on that page and you might find it.

How to See Wi-Fi Passwords on Android 9 and Older

If you’re running Android 9 or earlier, or your phone doesn’t feature the above option for some reason, you’ll need to turn to other options to reveal your Wi-Fi password. Unfortunately, these methods all require a rooted Android device.
This is because the file that holds the Wi-Fi credentials for saved networks is in a protected directory of your phone’s storage. You don’t have permission to view the folder, or the file within it, unless you’re rooted.
If you have a rooted device and want to see your Wi-Fi password on Android, you can head to /data/misc/wifiusing a file explorer app that supports root browsing. Open wpa_supplicant.confand you should see your network name (ssid) and its password (psk).
In case this doesn’t work, or you want to try another method, you can try using an Android Wi-Fi password viewer app like WiFi Password Viewer. These let you select a saved network to view the password.
They require root, and have mixed reviews, so your mileage may vary. If your phone encrypts the file containing Wi-Fi passwords, there isn’t much apps like this can do.
